It was important to visualise our shared emotions of where we grew up and the stories being told in the series. The team behind ‘Kura where showing our part of South Auckland in a way it’s never had the chance. Elevating it above the standard lens of a Police Ten-7 video crew, the show was about the unique humans a rough-and-ready town like Papakura creates.
In order to create a system that distilled these essences into a brand the tools had to be limited. I used only the old Posca markers I had on hand, using to my advantage the worn, unreliable tips to convey the raw, unique energy of the city in every hand-drawn letter.
Taking Papakura’s imperfections and turning it into a strength was a natural fit aesthetically and is part of the charm of the show’s overall success.
